The Digital News Report 2025 was released from Reuters on June 17th. Now we’ve had  a chance to read, watch (significantly!) and digest the report we wanted to highlight our top 3 takeaways…

The Smartphone Revolution

The report confirms that the smartphone has become the primary gateway to news, fundamentally changing how we consume information. In both the US (39%) and UK (37%), smartphones are now the dominant channel for daily news, especially for audiences under 35—58% in the UK and 57% in the US access news this way each day – significant for those looking to attract a younger audience. 

This shift means news is now bite-sized, interrupt-driven, and often consumed in between other tasks—forcing publishers to rethink mobile-first design, push‑notification strategy, and homepage hierarchies.

Video is Key

Video-based consumption continues to increase across all regions: 65% globally now watch news via social video, up from 52% five years ago, and 75% consume news via video in any format.

In markets such as Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya, and India, a significant share of users say they prefer watching news over reading it. In the US, social media overtook TV as the main news source for the first time, with 54% getting news via social platforms compared to 50% via TV.

The findings show clearly: publishers must build strong, platform-native video strategies to engage younger viewers who expect visual storytelling.

Accuracy, Reliability & the AI Question

This year’s report highlights deep concerns around the reliability of news—especially as AI becomes more integrated into the system. Globally, 58% worry about the difficulty of distinguishing true from false, with numbers as high as 73% in the US and Africa.

7% of global respondents now use AI chatbots weekly to get news, rising to 15% for under‑25s. While AI-powered summaries are gaining traction—27% of people are open to them—there is widespread scepticism: many feel AI news is less accurate, less transparent, and less trustworthy.

As AI continues to facilitate news delivery, trusted brands must emphasise their editorial transparency, fact‑checking, and human oversight to maintain credibility.
