Every year the Reuters Institute publishes their Digital News Report, and it always proves to be interesting reading. The end of 2022 and early 2023 were overrun with significant events, with the Ukraine war, 2022 midterm elections, and major Supreme Court decisions driving news interest within the US, helping to deliver a 6% increase in the number of people across the States accessing news daily (up to 73%).

The level of trust in news has increased from the 2022 report rising by 6%, but going into another presidential election cycle this is expected to fall once more with the world of “fake news” returning to the main headlines. The US consistently falls into the bottom half of all countries surveyed on levels of trust in the news media.

Following a particularly negative year in news interest and trust, the US markets seem to be on the incline once more, with opportunities and new ways to reach the masses through social media and online taking charge over continually declining TV and Print Media outlets.

The New York Times continues to excel in the fight for digital growth, increasing total number of subscribers to 9.6 million, up 1 million digital-only subscribers in 2022. This is significantly against the norm, however, with more than 360 newspapers closing their doors between late 2019 and May 2022, with all but 24 of those closing being weekly newspapers serving small to medium-sized communities. Opportunities to move newspapers to digital platforms is one approach that the non-profit, local funding opportunities and start-up labs are using to reduce this number and help to preserve local news. PageSuite continues to be a market leader in bringing newspapers and printed media to the digital world, through eEditions and App solutions, reducing publisher workloads and offering new revenue streams to help keep newspapers running and enabling them to hit new audiences.

PageSuite’s digital-only edition module has a wide-ranging list of use cases, with one of the more frequently engaged with options a digital replacement of print. If this is a challenge your publishing house is facing, please do contact us and we can help you review all of the available options.
