Johnston Press has an impressive newspaper portfolio of 13 paid-for daily newspapers, 195 paid-for weekly newspapers and 40 free titles, as well as a network of more than 195 local news and e-commerce websites. They are one of the largest local and regional multimedia organisations in the UK.
In December 2012 PageSuite launched tablet apps for a selection of its daily and weekly titles, including The Scotsman and The Yorkshire Post.
Johnston Press wanted to offer readers a more convenient and dynamic way to read their local paper, as well as a great way to keep up to date with the latest multimedia content.
Johnston Press provided PageSuite with a clear and concise design brief. PageSuite took this brief and created a working build to be reviewed before rolling out the design to the titles.
It was important that the app design could be easily replicated across all titles, whilst ensuring that each app featured its own unique branding elements.
Johnston Press wanted each of the apps to feature live website content and the replica PDF edition of the local newspaper which could be downloaded and read offline. They also wanted to ensure that they could include video content within the apps, as well as a live weather feed and an edition archive.
The tablet apps were very well received by the local audiences, with many readers loving the fact they could for the first time read their local paper from cover to cover on their tablet device.
Since launch the apps have been downloaded by iOS and Android tablet device users more than 175,000 times.
